About Almancil... Once renowned for its diversity of chimney pots, Almancil is the first major town west of Faro. It owed its growth in the nineteen eighties to two of the regions best known privately developed resorts - Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Built around some of the finest golf complexes in Europe, Quinta do Lago has hosted the Portuguese Open on several occasions and Vale do Lobo boasts of a course designed by the legendary Henry Cotton.
Just outside Almancil is one of Algarve’s gems, the 18th century Ingreja Matriz de São Lourenco church. The church was commissioned by local inhabitants in gratitude to St Laurance, who answered their prayers for water.
Many of the best restaurants in the Algarve are found sprawled along the roads that join Almancil town centre with São Lourenco, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. The literal translation of Vale do Lobo is Valley of the Wolves although it is unlikely you’ll find any now amongst some of the most expensive real estate in the Algarve!
At the southern tip of Quinta do Lago is a large open-air area where one can learn to windsurf or sail without the waves getting in the way. The Ria Formosa can be explored by a boat trip or using the well signed footpaths.
